Demi Lovato’s eating disorder trial gets NBC order

Demi Lovato stars in ‘Hungry’, a comedy pilot with a single camera about a group of people in a support group for food issues.

Demi Lovato’s comedy series about a group of people with eating disorders gets a pilot order from NBC.

The singer and actress is the lead role and CEO of the project, titled Hungry, which follows “friends who are part of a food issue group and help each other as they search for love, success and the perfect thing in the fridge that is going to improve it all.”

Other executive producers of the single-camera comedy include Sean Hayes, Todd Milliner, Scooter Braun, Scott Manson and James Shin.

Lovato himself has been open about eating disorders in the past. “I ate too much compulsively when I was 8 years old,” she told ABC News in 2011. “So for the last ten years, I’ve really had an unhealthy relationship with food.” Lovato also said this when she was at work Kamp Rock as a teenage Disney Channel star, she was bullied by her classmates over her weight, which in turn led to bulimia. “I performed concerts on an empty stomach,” she said. “I lost my voice through purification.”

If the project is green for series, it will be Lovato’s first regular TV role since she starred in Disney Channel’s 2009 series. Sonny With A Chance.

The news comes on the heels of NBC’s streaming service Peacock ordering another title with a mental health order, a drama titled Expiry date, starring Will Forte as a man who wants to commit suicide.

NBC also ordered another single-camera comedy pilot Somewhere out there, referred to as a “romantic comedy about two adults who are challenged by many unexpected strangers to become the best versions of themselves to find love and possibly each other.” The project is based on the Spanish format Pequenas Coincidencias created by Javier Veiga. Executive producers include Josh Siegal, Dylan Morgan, Matt Hubbard, Emiliano Calemzuk and Veiga.
