Daunte Wright shoots aftermath: Anti-police protests, clashes in cities across America

The fatal police shooting of Daunte Wright in Minnesota sparked another spate of protests in cities in America, some of which resulted in dozens of arrests and violent clashes with officers, while others appeared peaceful.

Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, was killed Sunday by Brooklyn Center Police Officer Kimberly Potter during a stop in the Minneapolis suburb. Brooklyn Police Chief Tim Gannon described the shooting as an accidental dismissal, saying she intended to fire a Taser, not a gun.

Here’s how cities respond to Wright’s death:

Authorities fired tear gas and instant grenades into the crowd after being warned they were violating the evening clock. Protesters retaliated by throwing smoke bowls back into law enforcement, while others reportedly fired fireworks at police officers.

“Move back!” police told the crowd. “Hands up! Do not shoot!” shouted the crowd back.

The evening began as a vigilance for Wright. Police said at least 200 people gathered at the Penumbra Kelly building around 8:30 p.m., which houses an office for the sheriff of Multnomah County and Portland police.

According to investigators, the crowd became more aggressive as the night progressed and glass bottles, frozen water bottles, rocks and fireworks began to be thrown at the officers and the building. Some in the crowd also tried to set fire to a garbage can.

The police said that they have made verbal warnings to the crowd, but at about 22:30, they declared the event a riot was before they came to the protesters, they are on the ground overthrown and they hacked, reported newspapers.

After officers pushed the crowd back, police said they “deliberately disconnected from the crowd” so people could start acting legally and peacefully. It is unclear whether arrests were made.

Louisville, Ky.

The group then pulled off into a street before being followed by several police vessels. Onlookers could be heard shouting, “You can not stop the revolution!” while officers move past them.

The protesters then stood in the middle of another intersection while at least ten police crossers watched, with their lights flashing. The police presence finally left and the protesters started sitting in the intersection.

After more chatter, the protesters left, according to Courier-Journal reporter Hayes Gardner. Police returned to clean tables, chairs and benches placed in the street.
