New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been able to skate over reporters’ remarks during his sensational visit to the White House on Friday, as the nursing home scandal in his state appears to have plunged him into fresh political trouble.
Cuomo, the chairman of the National Governors Association (NGA), spoke with President Biden, Vice President Harris and other governors and mayors – including the NGA Vice-President, the Republican Government of Arkansas, Asa Hutchinson – in the Oval Office on the ongoing issue to discuss national response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Biden did not take questions out of the press during the Oval Office meeting and Cuomo did not join Hutchinson when the Arkansas governor addressed reporters outside the White House later that day.
Cuomo and Hutchinson later issued a joint statement saying the White House meeting was “productive” and called on Congress to address an emergency relief package with “adequate state and local aid”.

“The end of this pandemic is in sight, and this support will provide states and territories with the necessary means to achieve it, while still providing the essential services that our voters rely on,” they said.
Cuomo’s own response to the outbreak is facing after several bomb reports from the Associated Press and the New York Post revealed that his government not only had more than 9,000 COVID-positive patients in the early weeks of the pandemic nursing homes, one of his own staff members conceded that he was withholding information on the number of COVID deaths in relief facilities, while apologizing to state Democratic lawmakers.
The governor is now facing charges of a cover-up and is getting backlash even from members of his own party in the New York Senate, who are asking for his emergency forces to be recalled. Other critics are calling for Cuomo to resign and for the Justice Department to investigate the handling of nursing homes during the pandemic.
