Chromecast issue with Google TV could break speaker groups

A handy feature of Google Assistant speakers and Android TVs is the ability to select a bunch of them to play the same sound at the same time. This is a useful feature, but if the new Chromecast with Google TV is part of your speaker group, it may break as well.

Prior to the release of the new Chromecast, Google had been working for some time to enable speaker groups to work with Android TV devices. It was, after all, a major issue of older Chromecast models, so the new one could not be missing. Although it does work at this point, some users have encountered issues.

An issue raised by the people on Android Police, some users have noticed that their speaker groups will stop playing randomly and only continuously buffer. Clearly, this is frustrating, and it seems to be happening with all music services as well. The culprit? While that may not be said to be a fact, the new Chromecast with Google TV seems to be the one causing the problem, and it’s still a few months and multiple updates later.

Personally, I experience this exact phenomenon quite a bit, but I did not realize that the Chromecast was the cause. On the contrary, I thought it’s just a quirk with Spotify. However, I’m not alone, as quite a few users reported this issue on Google’s forums until October last year.

Apparently, a solution to the problem of adding the new Chromecast to a speaker group after playback started is a feature that Google has introduced in recent months. The new Chromecast can still pause or freeze when the groups are set, but in that case it does not stop playback on all devices, only itself.

So far, there is no official solution or answer from Google on the matter.
