The Hong Kong action movie ‘Shock Wave 2’ opened for up to $ 65 million, while Pixar’s ‘Soul’ got limited screens and had only $ 5.5 million, but the film generates word of mouth and could climb somewhat next week.

Hong Kong action continued Skokgolf 2 China’s box office slipped over the weekend to a healthy $ 64.5 million. Youth fantasy movie Dream of eternity also did decent business, with $ 38.9 million.

Hollywood tent poles, however, fared much less well. Warner Bros. ‘ Wonder Woman 1984 was effectively sniffed out and added just $ 1.5 million in the second weekend, a 92 percent decrease from the disappointing $ 18.8 million opening, according to data from Artisan Gateway. The superhero tent pole, which cost $ 200 million to make, costs just $ 23.9 million and is expected to earn just a little more. The first Wonder Woman film raised $ 90.5 million in China.

Disney / Pixar’s Soul, which opened across Disney + in markets where the service is available, amounted to just $ 5.5. Amidst a crowded frame, the animated title has gained limited screens for its China bow, but that may change slightly thanks to the huge word-of-mouth that the film generates.

CONSIDERED Wonder Woman 1984 left Chinese filmmakers cold – with a low 7.8 from the ticket app Maoyan and 6.5 from Douban – Soul, directed by Pete Docter, is already benefiting from an extremely positive reception. The music-themed film started in fifth place on Friday and ended in third place by Sunday. Soul achieved a 9.6 rating from Maoyan, a 9.5 on Aloaba’s Tao Piao Piao and a 9.2 on Douban – some of the best social scores ever for a Pixar title.

Skokgolf 2‘s opening tour surpassed the first Skokgolf film’s total revenue of $ 58 million in 2017. The sequel was written and directed by Herman Yau and brings back Hong Kong veteran Andy Lau as a top expert on bumblebees. This time, the character is falsely accused of a terrorist attack and must prove his innocence while on the run. The film clicks with Chinese action fans, with a score of 9.2 on Maoyan and 8 from Douban. It earned $ 4.4 million from its total of 656 Imax screens. The film is co-distributed by Alibaba Pictures.

The Yin-Yang master: dream of eternity was written and directed by local teen favorite Guo Jinming, whose Small Times Franchise earned more than $ 300 million in China from 2013 to 2015. Like much of Guo’s work, the new film received rave reviews from critics – some Chinese Marvel fans even accused it of using visual elements of Doctor Strange (2016) – while still performing fairly well at the box office.

Dream of eternity is an adaptation of the Japanese author by Baku Yumemakura’s astonishing fantasy novel Onmyoji, which has produced countless comic strips of comics, TV, film and video games since its publication in 1986. In search of the pan-regional attraction, Netflix has acquired worldwide streaming rights to the title (outside of China) and will release it online on February 5th.

Dante Lam’s The salvation, the winner of the previous weekend, dropped sharply, adding just $ 9.9 million for a two-week total of $ 64.6 million. The sharp decline ensures that the film will lose money and the text of Lam’s previous action show will be completely short. Operation Red Sea, which earned $ 575 million. It is unlikely that The salvation will even earn its $ 90 million production budget.
