Sacha Baron Cohen came out hot at the beginning of his speech for Borat subsequent Moviefilm‘s win at the Golden Globes for best comedy or musical.
“Thanks to the pure white Hollywood Foreign Press,” he began, a shot at the group’s lack of black members, a fact that has gotten excited in the industry and beyond over the past few days. (Watch the full speech above.)
He also greeted ‘co-star’ Rudy Giuliani, without whom ‘this film would not have been possible’. Former President Donald Trump’s lawyer “came from nowhere and turned out to be a comedy genius.” (Giuliani put his hands in his pants in a hotel room during a scene with Maria Bakalova, who plays the 15-year-old daughter of Borat. He later said he was adjusting his microphone.)

“Who can laugh more out of a suit?” Baron Cohen amazes him. “Unbelievable. Our film was just the beginning for him. Rudy has starred in a series of comedy films, including Landscaping of four seasons, Hair dye another day and the courtroom drama A very public issue. ”
The rest of the comments by the co-writer and actor were just as straightforward and predictable as the victory in the category by Amazon Studios and Baron Cohen’s production company Four by Two Films. He rattled off a list of names and ended with a thank you and a kiss for his wife, Isla Fisher, who sat next to him during the speech, smiling and sometimes giggling.
The story of the film was the legendary thing long before the release of October last year. Baron Cohen effectively retired the character after the film grossed more than $ 260 million at the worldwide box office in 2006 and captured its stars. (He also won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical.)
After the election of Trump and several of his officials, Baron Cohen recalled in interviews, he began talking to his associates about a way to revive the Kazakh journalistic character. Eventually, they hit the plot of the film. The production then got going and was the first recording that got underway during Covid-19. Baron Cohen was planning to land the film before the November 3 election. Among several bidders, Amazon has not only made a strong financial offer, but also a firm assurance to release it over its global streaming service ahead of election day.
Streaming numbers are always hard to come by, but Amazon said that ‘tens of millions’ of Prime Video subscribers watched the film during the opening weekend. The film’s scorched earth treatment of Trumpworld (especially the Giuliani scene) made the film a cultural moment. Although he had to adopt disguises as the gray-suit-and-caterpillar mustache appearance of Borat became too well known to avoid detection, Baron Cohen drew a follow-up.
