We saw a little more of the ROG Phone 5, the gamer phone from Asus, in the run up to its official announcement. Yesterday, a chip vendor slipped that at least one model will be equipped with a staggering 18 GB of memory. Today it appears that a Twitter leak is showing the phone in version, with a white variant and a flashing cooling unit transferred from the latest model, and which looks like an LED matrix on the back.

Assume that the images posted by Ishan Agarwal is legal – and it certainly matches last month’s leak – the RGB LEDs integrated on the back of the phone reflect a different Asus hardware design. The ROG Zephyrus G14 laptop includes a similar LED “aniMe Matrix” screen on its top lid as a striking feature. If the back of the ROG Phone 5 is similar, it offers adjustable decorative screen settings and animations that can be adjusted by the user, such as an equalizer screen. Its practical applications will be quite limited, but the laptop uses it to indicate the date and charge status. The display photos only show the ROG eye logo.

The snazzy white version shows a similar design. It is not clear from the versions whether the additional oblique text and arrow icons on the back are part of the rear LCD screen that appears in the older leak, or that the dot matrix section replaces it. for comparison, here is the previous video leak that shows what is definitely an LCD screen and which does not match the text and icons of the versions above:

Since it’s all unofficial, the video could of course be a pre-production model with a design that has since been abandoned. It is also possible that there are different variants of the phone: one with a regular LCD on the back, one with the dot matrix. Other details visible on the images are triple rear cameras and an underpowered power port (the better to keep your hands clean for games), both of which are transmitted from the ROG Phone 3. There is also an expandable kickstand and buttons of some kind on the updated active cooler – maybe dedicated rear trigger buttons?

The styling has been adjusted and keeps the angular approach with full edges (no notches or holes) and a new distinctive “GLHF!” decorative covering at the bottom. Based on the small hole, it could be a SIM card slot that has decided it wants nothing to do with subtlety. Asus is expected to officially announce the ROG Phone 5 tomorrow. Pricing and availability are not known, but “expensive” and “limited” seem like a safe bet, respectively.
