  • Asus has confirmed that the next ROG Phone will be called the ROG Phone 5.
  • It also revealed that a model of the Tencent brand is underway.

We all expected the Asus ROG Phone 4 to be launched later this year, but the first photos that leaked suggested that the Taiwanese brand might skip a number this year. Now Asus has confirmed on Weibo (h / t: MySmartPrice) that this is indeed the case.

The Weibo posts confirm the ROG Phone 5 name, while it also appears that a variant of Tencent is being manufactured. Check out the machine-translated posts below.

ROG Phone 5 confirms name weibo

This is not the first time we have seen a smartphone brand skip the number four, as OnePlus is also moving from OnePlus 3 and 3T to OnePlus 5. For what it’s worth, the number four in several Asian countries is becoming an unlucky number regard. It’s unclear if that’s why Asus is skipping the number.

It would also not be the first time we see a Tencent-supported ROG phone variant, as we have seen it before with the ROG phone 2 and 3. These variants are usually cheaper than the standard ROG phone models, but over generally limited to China. In any case, the confirmation of the ROG Phone 5 name indicates that a launch is imminent.

We expect a Snapdragon 888 chipset, lots of RAM and a large amount of storage in the top model, while leaked images also point to a secondary screen at the back. You can see all the notable rumors and leaks in our ROG Phone 5 rumors hub.
