If you were hoping to pick up a new RTX 30 series GPU in the coming months, Nvidia warns about the shortage of supply for the rest of 2021. ‘We expect demand to increase supply much of this year will exceed, ‘said Colette Kress, Nvidia CFO, on an investor call earlier this week.
This means that the problems with finding a new 30-series GPU are likely to continue, possibly until 2022. Nvidia had earlier warned that supplies “are likely to remain meager” by fiscal Q1, and now that we are nearing the milestone (end April) it is clear that supply has not improved significantly to meet demand.
TSMC and Intel also warn that problems with chip delivery could last until 2022. The worldwide shortage of chips has forced some carmakers to reduce production, and consumers are finding it almost impossible to find new graphics cards, CPUs, PS5s and Xboxes.
Nvidia does note that the supply will continue to increase despite the problems as 2021 progresses. “We will see supply increase during this quarter as well as during the year,” Kress said. Regardless, it’s still going to be difficult to find a new GPU if you have to compete with fellow gamers, cryptominers, and scalpers that push the real prices of GPUs out of control.
