Fact check: This CISF officer was not injured during a violent poll in Sitalkuchi in West Bengal

Four people were killed during the shooting by CISF Javanese at Sitalkuchi in the Cooch Behar district of West Bengal during the fourth phase of the April 10 election. The CISF claimed that a crowd attacked them and tried to snatch their guns.

The incident led to a word fight with the Trinamool Congress in which it is alleged that the deceased were their supporters and that the BJP accused the ruling party of inciting violence. Several BJP leaders such as Suvendu Adhikari, Arjun Singh and Saumitra Khan tweeted a photo of an injured CISF man claiming he was attacked by Trinamool goons during the election violence. Some of them later deleted their posts.

The image is widely circulated on social media with the same claim.

But although clashes broke out between locals and CISF staff at Sitalkuchi, India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found that the viral picture had nothing to do with the incident. The photo is of CISF ASI SP Sharma who was attacked by a langur in Dhanbad on April 9th.

The archived versions of the posts are stored here and here.

AFWA investigation

Using reverse image search, we found that the viral image was published on April 10, 2021 on the “Jagran” website.

According to this news report, the injured man seen in the photo is CISF ASI SP Sharma, who was attacked by a langur while on duty in Baghmara in Dhanbad, Jharkhand.

For further clarification, we reached out to CISF sub-inspector Pradeep Kumar in Dhanbad. Kumar confirmed that it was ASI Sharma in the photo who was attacked by a group of langurs on April 9 at around 18:30. At the time, Sharma was posted in the BK-2 area at the Bharat Coking Coal Limited plant in Baghmara.

‘These long hours are a nuisance in the area. Several measures were taken to control it, but in vain. A group of langurs attacked Sharma. “He tried to defend himself with a lathi, but one particular langur that was very violent attacked him on the face,” Pradeep Kumar said.

Therefore, it is confirmed that the virus photo of the injured CISF man has nothing to do with the violence in Sitalkuchi in West Bengal.
