“Avatar” is again the best earning movie of all time.
This past weekend, the James Cameron scientist was released in China again and got enough tickets to make ‘Avengers: Endgame’ for the record.
‘Avatar’ became the first global bestseller of all time in 2010 when it defeated Cameron’s ‘Titanic’. In 2019, “Avengers: Endgame” won the title with a box office of $ 2.797 billion.
As of Saturday, the “Avatar” box office grossed $ 2.802 billion so it could earn its crown.
“These two theater titles have been on the box office on Mount Olympus for years,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. “As ‘Avatar’ takes the crown again, the importance of the big-screen experience, both in terms of its cultural impact, and of course the massive revenue-generating power is brought into sharper focus.”
The directors of ‘Endgame’, Joe and Anthony Russo, took to social media to congratulate Cameron.
“Give the glove back to you,” they wrote in the mail.
Originally part of the re-declarations approved by China’s Film Bureau in 2020, the 2009 scientist remained in Disney’s vault during the ongoing pandemic.
Although China has been able to regain some ticket sales over the past few months, the introduction of new instant features has slowed down after the celebration of the Chinese New Year. The addition of “Avatar” to its theaters is a way to revamp the attendance and give the operators a much-needed boost at a time when new films are not being released.
“We are proud to reach this great milestone, but Jim and I are very happy that the film is back in theaters at these unprecedented times, and we want to thank our Chinese fans for their support,” said producer Jon Landau. “We’re working hard on the next Avatar movies and look forward to sharing the sequel to this epic story for years to come.”
The first new film in the Avatar franchise will be released in 2022. It will be one of five in the next decade. Disney only recently acquired ‘Avatar’, although the film previously had a license to build a country at the Animal Kingdom theme park in Florida.
In 2019, Disney sealed its deal to acquire entertainment assets from 20th Century Fox, including James Cameron’s “Avatar.”
As it stands now, Disney owns the five best-grossing films and eight of the top ten. ‘Titanic’, currently third, was mainly a joint production between Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox. The other movies are ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, ‘live-action’ 2019 remake of ‘The Lion King’, ‘Avengers’ and ‘Frozen II’.
