If the past year has shown anything, it’s Samsung eventually takes Android updates seriously, both big and small. Now we get some clarity about Samsung’s long-term support, specifically the last year of support for Samsung Android updates.
As of this year, Samsung has been offering support to nearly its entire library of Galaxy smartphones and tablets for four years, something virtually unknown on Android. However, this is not four years of the support you see during the launch. Things fall off rather after year two, and then further for the fourth year.
This is the fourth year that Samsung has not been very explicit about. Samsung’s official security update page promised only ‘regular’ security updates for some devices. It can mean monthly, bi-monthly, annual or really anything in between. Now, like the people at Android Police noted, Samsung has updated the page to explain that these updates are bi-monthly.
Two updates a year is not really something to be happy about, but it is definitely much better than nothing. Samsung does not say when these two updates should come, but Samsung will take advantage of most of these by offering the final update at the end of the fourth year of support. Currently, about 35 devices receive biennial updates, mostly devices launched in 2017 and 2018.
