Duke withdrew from the ACC men’s basketball tournament due to a positive COVID-19 case within the program, the school announced Thursday morning.
“This will end our 2020-21 season,” Kevin White said in a statement. “We wish every team that still plays college basketball good health and the best for the next few weeks.”
Duke, who is considered a bubble team for the NCAA Tournament that needs another win to secure a spot on the field, would play Florida State on Thursday night in Greensboro, NC.
Duke has not missed the NCAA Tournament since 1995.
“I feel deeply for our players, who have done an excellent job all season to take care of each other and the team,” coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement. “I am extremely proud of their joint stance and effort, which could not have been stronger. We are disappointed that after two outstanding days in Greensboro we can not continue to fight as a group.”
The positive case is now becoming a problem to monitor for Louisville, who lost 70-56 to Duke on Wednesday night. Louisville hopes to receive a big bid for the NCAA Tournament and is within the NCAA required period of seven live negative COVID-19 Tests for entrants next week in Indianapolis.
