LONDON – Prince William denied in his first public comment on Thursday that Britain’s royal family was racist after his brother, Prince Harry, and Harry’s wife, Meghan, claimed in a bomb interview that a family member had expressed concern about their child’s well color.
In a report by a reporter on whether the royal family was racist, Prince William said it was ‘very not a racist family’, in comments posted and posted on social media.
He also said he had not spoken to Harry since the interview aired Sunday in the United States and Monday night in Britain. “But I will do it,” he added.
In the tell-all interview, Harry called the British press racist and Meghan said that royal life was so emotionally isolated that it made her consider suicide. The accusations sparked a national discussion about entrenched racism in the monarchy and in the press itself.
In the interview, Harry said that his relationship with his brother is ‘space’.
The royal family offered an official response to the interview on Tuesday, saying that “the whole royal family is sad.” The family said they were particularly concerned about the issue of racism raised by the couple, but said it would be handled privately. William’s remarks were first made by a family member during a public appearance.
The comment comes as he and his wife, Kate – also known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – visit a school in London following the reopening of schools in the country this week. It was their first public appearance since Harry and Meghan’s interview aired.
Their visit, which focused on mental health, was at the right time to mark the beginning of an initiative for mental health resources in schools.
