Iowa Vaccination System Relys on Iowans to Be True

JOHNSTON, Iowa (AP) – While Iowa is increasing vaccinations to include everyone between the ages of 16 and 64 with underlying health conditions, the state has turned to the honorary system without it being valid if someone claims to qualify for ‘ a shot due to a health problem.

The state allows adult Iowans to be vaccinated if they have one of several conditions, including cancer, lung disease and heart disease that create a higher risk of serious illness if they get a coronavirus infection. Obesity and smoking also qualify.

Iowa health officials say the system relies heavily on Iowans being honest about their health when arranging for a vaccine. Government Kim Reynolds says the process is working well.
