New York. Isabel Allende is not only the most prolific Spanish language writer in the world, but also a self-proclaimed and French feminist. If there is anything to be surprised about his recent book, Mujeres del alma mía, read the United States in the Month of the History of the Woman, showing the days before the train of a miniseries about his life.
In his first book of fiction in more than one decade, available in English with the title of The soul of a woman (Ballantine Books), Allende recaps his relationship with feminism from childhood up to date, recording on the blackheads that the brand, from his mother Panchita and his wife Paula, has the literary agent Carmen Balcells and the writers Virginia Woolf and Margaret Atwood. Also reflections on the #MeToo movement, the recent social upheavals in Chile and the current global situation.
“The year of the pandemic has kept him paralyzed and much of what he hates the women have said to call and protest”, said the Chilean author in a recent interview with The Associated Press via Zoom from his home in California .
“The woman is only very vulnerable, the women together are invincible … But it is not that the creed was retrieved or detained”, added, “the things that follow”.
His first 50 years of life were dramatized in Isabel: The intimate history of the writer Isabel Allende, a series of three episodes that will be released on March 12 on HBO Max, protagonist of the Chilean actress Daniela Ramírez.
The miniseries, produced by Megamedia Chile and directed by Rodrigo Bazaes, marks the story of the decade of his marriage, which took place in 1992 until the 29th year ended in a deep cerebral and with a serious cerebral palsy leading to a porphyria crisis. misma Allende in his book Paula of 1994).
“I hizo llorar a gritos pork empieza con Paula en el hospital y termina con la muerte de Paula. We live with my wife (Nicolás) and the two of us who are ready to go to bed with the first stage. But it is despised in the sense that it is not emotional for us ”, says the writer, who is extremely complacent and impressed with the result.
Allende suele empezar un libro nueva cada 8 de enero. Last year the decision was made to end the term in one sentence: Mujeres del alma mía (Vintage Español), and a novella titled Violet which empyza with the pandemic of 1918 (“que empezó en Chile en 1920 realmente”, acota) y termine con la pandemia de ahora. “It’s the life of a woman at this time”, adelantó sin dar at the moment a publication fecha.
During the interview with AP, Allende recorded the origins of his feminism and also shared his experience as a “recent cascade” in confinement (the author of 78 years ago spent three months in July 2019 with the Norwegian lawyer Roger Cukras). “It’s like an extended meal of flour that never ends”, dijo entre risas.
The questions and answers were published for the mayor’s briefing and clarity.
AP: Het dicho y escrito que desde niña te molestaban las injusticias contra las mujeres y que era algo que veias en tu propia familia. But, when and how can you tell if you are a feminist?
Allende: “Querida, the palabra does not exist! When I was in Chile, imagining the 40s, in a conservative, Catholic, patriarchal family, my mother was abandoned by the martyr and we lived in the house of my father. Puros hombres, mis tíos y mi abuelo. Y mi abuelo era el patriarca absoluto. He was a good man, he loved it, but he had the maximum authority, he was like God. That’s what I did not ask. I was born with this feeling that my mother was in a situation of injustice, in a situation of inequality, of vulnerability. My mother lives in the same house and suppose that I pay the college and all that, but my mother never had ten money, never ten libertad. By being a woman separated in this era, in that society, my mother was very ill-tempered; has much to do with his reputation, which is also very limited. And when did I come to find out that it was rabid that I felt a number? I do not believe that you have reached adolescence, because you have no children. And there is no doubt that there is a movement that exists, and that you can belong to this movement, there are 20 for me ”.
AP: ¿U sentiste liberada o accompanien de alguna manera? How do you record it?
“I agree with you The female eunuch (1970) by Germaine Greer, that was a book with humor, with intelligence, with a way of deciding the things that were direct and tan obvia. I’m feeling all these sentiments, but not the express expression, not the articulate expression, have you read this book. I agree with this moment. And I agree with you, when it comes to feminism and looking for reviews and books on the subject ”.
Mujeres del alma mía is your first book of fiction in more than one decade. What did you write at the moment?
‘No fue idea mia. A discourse in Mexico City has a waiting time and the discourse is a viral phenomenon. The editors in Spain think that Iban will publish as a book asi. Yo lo lei y dije, “this question is totally old, fashioned”, because in a short time habían sucedido el #MeToo, Black Lives Matter, las protests de las mujeres en la calle, las thesis en Chile, tanta cosa que había sucedido que por supuesto no staba mentioned in the discourse. Dije “nee, esto no sirve”. I was tempted to think in my own tray directory and in what way I live and how he lived the movement, why did he do it simultaneously, do you do it? The movement for female liberation is very early, but it actually took place with the pill in the 60s, when the woman first had to check her fertility. I created a space that I did not have before, a space that I suppose my mother had two; my mother was born four years old and had three children ”.
The emperor should write just when empezábamos and encerrarnos for the pandemic. What do you hope will happen to the movement of women?
“The year of the pandemic has been completely paralyzed … But it is not as if the creature has been retrieved or detained, the following things are happening. And feminism is united with other movements that are in the same vein as Black Lives Matter, which is a subversion against the establishment, against a racist system. But it is also the same system, a machismo system, that it is the masculine gender supremacy over the other women, about other races, about the people who have no power, about the nines, etc. So many things we have in common. To challenge the power of the establishment, we do so only as we can walk along … Have the moment when you have found a foundation in the society where we live and treat ourselves to establish a new, different, more just and normal normality and more todos ”.
How did we deal with the pandemic since the last time we lived?
“Well, because a clerk or clerk is the one who needs time, silence and solitude, and so it’s me who caused the pandemic … I’ve been convicted and mired, the pandemic has a proof of power because it’s an extension luna de miel que no termina nunca (risas). But in this moon of honey we learn much that many of us have learned to learn in years … I think that it suits me as a couple, as a family, can be extrapolated to humanity, and that we are obliged to convivi on a fragile planet, in a limited space that has to be sustainable, that we keep that orderly and limp, because we do not care. We need passion, tolerance, compassion, bondage. We need the resources we need for everything. Lo justo, no se necesita más ”.
How do you know about the series you are about to train for your life?
“When I was confronted with the project, I never thought that I would do it, on the other hand, as it is not very important. One day I was called and that was practically nothing. I’m the only one who claims that I have much respect for the other people who appear in the series, because I’m writing memos about my own life, I’ve been through the codes, because I’re not connected to anything private and no tengo derecho has no privacy. But the people who drive me, who have private lives, have to be respected by them; esas historias no me pertenecen. Pero lo hicieron bien, porque respetaron a mi exmarido, ‘n mis hijos. ‘N My me gustó mucho the final result. Found that you are very worthy ”.
What is the role of the protagonist? Are you well represented?
“Actress Daniela Ramírez hace a papel yo creo difficult that he imitates another person, treats the other person. And besides, we don’t really like it, because it’s a very young and beautiful woman. But it is clear that the hiccups are the most painful, the vestments. I have a necklace like mine with plates and each one of these months is different, this is for me especially a joy. I’m imitaron identico! And as there are many details of coma era the house, of the nines, the Paulita koop igual a lo que era. It’s very emotional ”.
