570 COVID-19 cases, 5 deaths, 26,098 vaccinations reported on Utah state of emergency

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah’s COVID-19 cases increased by 570 on Saturday, with five more deaths and 26,098 vaccinations, according to the Utah Department of Health.

The day was the one-year anniversary of the declaration of emergency for the coronavirus pandemic in Utah and the first confirmed case of the state.

According to the health department, the current average number of positive cases of seven days per day is now at 527. The positive test rate per day for the period reported using the “people over people” method is now 9.5%. The positive test rate per day of seven days, calculated using the ‘test over test’ method, is now 4.6%.

There are 194 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized in Utah, including 77 in intensive care. About 71.5% of all beds for intensive care units in Utah are occupied, including 74.8% of the ICU beds in the state’s 16 referral hospitals. About 54.2% of the non-ICU hospital beds are occupied, according to the health department.

A total of 843,032 vaccines were administered in the state, compared to 816,934 on Friday. A total of 546,814 people received at least one dose of vaccine, while 304,168 were completely vaccinated according to the Department of Health. A total of 1,005,715 vaccines have now been delivered in Utah.

Of the 2,243,694 people tested to date for COVID-19 in Utah, 16.7% tested positive for the disease. The number of tests since the pandemic began is now at 3,903,480, up 18,594 since Friday.

The five deaths reported on Saturday include:

  • A Salt Lake County woman over the age of 85 who was not hospitalized at the time of death
  • A Salt Lake County woman between 45 and 64 years old and was hospitalized at the time of death
  • A Weber County man between the ages of 45-64 and was hospitalized at the time of death
  • A Salt Lake County resident between the ages of 25-44 and was hospitalized at the time of death
  • A Uintah County woman between 45-64 years old and hospitalized at death

Saturday’s total gives Utah 374,438 total confirmed cases, with 14,867 total hospitalizations and 1,975 total deaths due to the disease. A total of 358,249 cases in Utah COVID-19 are now considered recovery, according to data from the Department of Health

Utah Governor Spencer Cox announced at a Thursday news conference that admission to the COVID-19 vaccine will be extended to Utahs 50 years and older, as well as residents of the state with more underlying health conditions.
