In a breakthrough discovery, scientists have discovered signs of a hidden structure in the Earth’s core that has the potential to change the long-standing story of the planet’s center. According to scientists, it was called the ‘fifth layer’, apart from the previously known four layers – the crust, the mantle, the outer core and the inner core, and saw changes to the structure of iron in the inner core that formed a new ‘boundary line ‘suggested. extends about 650 kilometers from the center of the earth.
According to the Daily Mail report, the fifth layer has been suspected by researchers for more than a decade, but it is almost impossible to detect. The lead author of the study and the geophysicist of the Australian National University, Joanne Stephenson, is quoted by the media as saying that it is “very exciting” and noted that the textbooks may need to be rewritten now after the discovery of another layer .

How did researchers find this?
The researchers use travel time data for seismic waves moving within the earth and captured by the International Seismological Center. After this, they used their new algorithm to search through the data to discover evidence of changes in the structure of the earth’s inner core. Despite the fact that it was ‘particularly difficult’ to detect the slight changes, the researchers were able to show that two separate coolings have taken place in the history of the planet.
It also implies that in the earliest years of the Earth’s evolution, at least 4.56 billion years ago, the planet went through a dramatic and previously unknown event. Stephenson explained that the details of this “big event are still a bit puzzling”, but the researchers were able to add another “piece of the puzzle” when it came to knowledge about the earth’s core. Although the observations were indirect, geologists were able to determine that the inner core of the earth reaches temperatures of more than 5,000 degrees Celsius and is relatively smaller, that is, it constitutes only 1% of the total volume of earth.
