Neon

Distributor Neon is teaming up with Letterboxd, the fast-growing global film discussion and discovery social network, to give platform users access to the studio’s documentary and foreign films, which are being shortlisted for the 93rd Academy Awards. From March 8 to 14, Letterboxd users can stream all of Neon’s six shortlisted titles for the $ 19.99 discount package at watch.neonrated.com. This news is the first time that Letterboxd is offering new movies that have not streamed directly to its membership base on any other platforms.

The six films included in the volume are a documentary rival ‘Gunda’ directed by Victor Kossakovsky and executive produced by Joaquin Phoenix; Gianfranco Rosi’s “Notturno”, which is the Italian award for Best International Feature Academy Award; “The Painter and the Thief,” directed by Benjamin Ree and shortlisted for Best Documentary Oscar; Andrei Konchalovsky’s best international presentation from Russia, “Dear comrades !; “Night of the Kings”, Philippe Lacôte’s Oscar presentation in Ivory Coast; and Jasmila Žbanić’s “Quo Vadis, Aida?”, presented by Bosnia and Herzegovina.

According to a statement from David Larkin, CEO of Letterboxd: “Working with Neon to present this selection of six sensational films is an exciting opportunity for our community to participate in the awards show.”

The partnership should also drive new members to the site (which recently appeared in The New York Times). Launched in 2011, Letterboxd is a global community of more than three million movie lovers in more than 200 countries. Users rate, rate and share their movie viewing activities. Last year, the Letterboxd community watched 210 million movies, wrote 16 million reviews, and created nearly two million lists.

Neon was recently in the news at the Berlin Film Festival for the acquisition of Céline Sciamma’s award-winning world premiere “Petite Maman.” The distribution of the film will reunite Neon with Sciamma after their successful collaboration on ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’ from 2019. Other upcoming projects in Neon include Pablo Larraín’s ‘Spencer’, with Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in an important moment in her life. ; Ben Wheatley’s return to bloody horror with ‘In the Earth’, which recently had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival; as well as a narrative remake of the Norwegian documentary “The Painter and the Thief.”
