Dems’ stimulus package “dramatically more money than needed” – McConnell
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell described President Joe Biden’s 1.9 tonne coronavirus relief bill as ‘dramatically more money than needed’, while the Democrats are pursuing their effort to push through the aid package – which includes a third round of stimulus tests – without Republican support.
“The Democrats are trying to continue with a biased newspaper package,” McConnell told reporters Tuesday. “You know the history, but it’s worth telling you that we did every valid package we passed last year on a dual basis. I was hoping that the new government, especially since the president is so often moderate as a moderate, would choose to take another away.
“Especially if you look at the numbers: a 50-50 Senate, a narrow majority in the House … I would think that, if you look at it, your conclusion would be: maybe we should start on a dual basis. But alas, that is not the case.
‘As you know, ten of our members actually went down [to the White House] and met the president and talked about a narrower, more focused approach. The message was that they were not interested in doing so. They are going to try to work it through completely on a biased basis.
‘And I think I can speak it safely to most of my members we think it’s dramatically more money than is required at this particular time. It also contains a number of things that have absolutely nothing to do with covid lighting. And so it will be controversial. “
