CRESCENT CITY, Fla. A intensified search for a missing 20-year-old mother from Putnam County, found human remains on Saturday in a heavily wooded area outside Crescent City.
The Sheriff of Putnam Province has called in the mobile crime lab of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to help identify the remains, which were found around 8 a.m. Saturday.
Sheriff’s Office Col. Joe Wells said investigators have not yet been able to determine the gender of the remains or whether they belong to an adult. He said that the only thing they are sure of so far is that the remains are human.
“We are still engaged in the very long, thorough, tedious process of recovering the remains and investigating the crime scene in the area,” Wells said. “We certainly do not know if it is related to the case (missing persons) or not for sure.”
According to Wells, detectives have not yet been able to say how long the remains were in the woods. They use 3D scans of the scene, as well as metal detectors to slowly retrieve and preserve the remains for autopsy and to find evidence that is in the area.

Authorities are still searching for 20-year-old Nyeisha Nelson, whose vehicle was found abandoned Thursday in a wooded area near Old US 17, not far from Crescent City. It was processed for evidence and K9 units searched the area but there was no sign of her.
“The search is still very active and ongoing,” Wells said. “We still ask that anyone who has information about contact with his or her vehicle can contact us.”
Wells said the remains were found about 4 to 5 miles northwest of the spot where Nelson’s vehicle was found.
