Doctors find side effects from COVID-19 can mimic breast cancer in some cases

As the spread of the COVID-19 vaccine increases nationwide, doctors say there is a side effect that health officials are warning people about.

“We now realize a little wrinkle that has arisen in the world of breast imaging, as it is related to a mammogram,” said dr. Kelly McDonough, co-clinical director of Breast Health Network, said.

After some received the COVID-19 vaccine, doctors noticed swollen lymph nodes. Dr McDonough said the lymph nodes could be a normal response to the vaccine.

“They are rushing up and making antibodies,” said Dr. McDonough said. “The COVID-19 vaccine elicits a strong immune response.”

Most studies have indicated that the swelling has been seen more with the Moderna vaccine.

Dr McDonough said this side effect makes it difficult for doctors to read mammograms.

“One of the secondary signs of breast cancer is swelling of the lymph nodes,” said Dr. McDonough said.

Doctors follow guidelines for navigating through the side effect, such as asking patients if they have received a COVID-19 vaccine, which vaccine, in which arm, and for how long the person has been vaccinated.

If you are planning to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, dr. McDonough said to schedule your mammogram in advance or wait four to six weeks thereafter.
