Republicans criticize President Biden’s move to end a Trump era to reinstate United Nations sanctions against Iran as the government takes a warmer tone toward Tehran.
“This is outrageous and dangerous. Biden has just legitimized Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping weapons to Iran,” Rep. Joe Wilson, RS.C., said. “Why?”

“I agree Joe,” replies rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., Who sits on committees for the judiciary and foreign affairs. “Why does Biden lift UN sanctions banning Putin from selling weapons to Iran? This seems to justify an investigation …”
The reaction comes on a step by the Biden government to end the Trump administration’s position on the ‘snackback’ of the UN sanctions against Tehran.
The Trump administration caused the ‘snapback’ mechanism in August, which would restore all UN sanctions that fell under the Iran nuclear deal in 2015. The move came after a failed US attempt to extend an arms embargo on Iran that would expire in October as part of the 2015 agreement and banned the regime from buying and selling weapons from allies.

The attempt to withdraw the sanctions, however, was rejected by the UN Security Council, which said the US had no power to use the mechanism as it was part of the agreement from which the US withdrew.
The then Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, rejected the UN arguments, claiming that they were part of the accompanying UN resolution in which the United States still participated.
However, the Biden government tried to take a different approach to the Iranian regime and again tried to enter into the Iran agreement. As part of that, the State Department said a letter had been sent to the Council reversing the U.S. position on the snapback.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Called Biden’s attitude towards Iran ‘nothing but reckless’.
“Not long after Iranian-backed forces attacked Americans in Iraq, President Biden is desperately trying to re-enter into a failed agreement and provide the Iranian government with sanctions,” Rubio said in a statement. “The president must make it clear that he understands that Khamenei cannot be trusted to abide by international agreements, and that the United States will not play into the hands of the Iranians for the next four years.”
The move by the administration is one of a number of moves to stop the Trump era’s foreign policy. Biden re-entered the US into the Paris climate agreement and halted the US withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO).

In a speech to European leaders Friday, Biden indicated he was trying to page the Trump era.
“I am sending a clear message to the world, America is back, the transatlantic alliance is back and we are not looking back, we are looking forward together,” he said during a virtual speech at the annual Security Conference in Munich.
