“I thought I was really in good shape. This is the problem. I walked seven days a week every day, ”Jones said.
He was surprised, but his silent attack is not rare.
“One in three people who have a heart attack have no symptoms at all,” said Dr. Michael Gurule, a cardiologist at Lovelace Health System.
He said adults of all ages can have some kind of heart disease.
‘What happens to most people is that they get heart disease. They have a history of diabetes, high blood pressure. “Unfortunately, smoking is the worst,” said Dr Gurule.
Most people will not know that their heart is in trouble before a heart attack occurs. He said there are red flags known as angina symptoms that warn people about a possible heart attack. However, not everyone gets a clear warning.
“If you have the chest pressure, I can say sorry that it only happens one out of three times,” said dr. Gurule said. ‘The second group is going to feel something, but they probably won’t think it’s the heart. It’s going to feel like a discomfort in the jaw. It’s going to feel like indigestion. I had people who went to the dentist because they had toothaches. ”
He said that the most frightened group is people like Jones – who receive no warning.
Gurule recommends that people check their family’s heart history, do research, get a stress test, exercise and cut out unhealthy habits like smoking.
