Playing older games on the new generation consoles is almost always better thanks to the improved power, but Microsoft takes things a step further with a new feature called FPS Boost for Xbox Series X and Series S. for certain backward-compatible Xbox One titles when played on the current generation of Xbox consoles, which doubles or doubles the original frame rate of the games.
FPS Boost will initially be available for five games: Far Cry 4, New Super Lucky’s Languages, Sniper Elite 4, EA Sports UFC 4, en Watch Dogs 2. According to Microsoft, the frame rate for each of these games will be significantly increased, which means in the case of 60 fps UFC 4, or up to 120 fps for New Super Lucky’s Languages.
Microsoft said in an Xbox Wire message Wednesday that the company “worked closely with developers to improve the experience while maintaining the game’s original intent” for titles that support FPS Boost.
Once the feature is launched, players can open the “Manage Game” option and find a new menu called “Compatibility Options”. Here players can turn on features like Auto HDR and FPS Boost if available in the game they are playing. Meanwhile, a small icon will let players know when FPS Boost is on as soon as they press the Nexus button.
Microsoft does not yet have a fixed release date for FPS Boost, but does mention that it is scheduled to be part of this year’s spring console update. On top of that, players can look forward to announcements of new games that will support FPS Boost in the coming months.
