The city has released new statistics on the deployment of Covid-19 vaccines that show how many people got the vaccine at the zip code level. (Update: We initially had incorrect figures for total vaccinations, but have since corrected them.)
Nationwide, 715,000 people received at least one shot. This is a little over 10% of the adult population. Of the districts, Manhattan has the second highest percentage of adults who received at least one shot, with 14%. Staten Island has the highest, with 15%.
On the Upper West Side, each of the main postal codes has an above average percentage of people who got at least one chance:
10023: 20% of the adult population
10024: 22%
10025: 19%
One reason for the high rate may be that the Upper West Side has an excessive number of older people. But it can also have to do with the richness of the environment.
Councilors pointed out that the vaccine was largely given to people from richer postcodes – and those who were often not hit so hard by Covid in the first place. The city and state have been criticized for doing too little outreach and creating an intricate online system that benefits technically savvy people. ‘In affluent, whiter areas, 16% of adults are fully grown. In low-income colors, as low as 2%, ”wrote councilor Mark Levine. “It’s upside down. It can not stand. ”
