Mets add Kevin Pillar to MLB-free agency

The Mets have done another upgrade in their outfield and on Monday agreed a one-year contract with free agent Kevin Pillar, Mike Puma, The Post confirmed.

The exact terms of the transaction are not immediately known.

The 32-year-old gives the Mets a third option in the middle, along with Brandon Nimmo and Albert Almora Jr., the minor league.

The pillar that is right has jumped after seven seasons with the Blue Jays. He reached .308 with two home runs, 13 RBIs and a .801 OPS in 24 games to finish 2020 with the Rockies. Pillar started last season with the Red Sox, for which he hit .274 in 30 games.

The Mets, who missed out on award-winning center fielder George Springer, tried to improve their outfield in the off-season. While Pillar has mostly played in the center, he is not the same player he was earlier in his career. But he could also serve as a defensive replacement for Smith in the left. He can also start against leftists, against whom he has had a .298 / .332 / .538 dash for the past two years.
