The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced that it has no plans to require coronavirus testing on domestic flights. Airline executives have sharply criticized the idea in recent weeks, arguing that it would reduce the already weak demand and reduce valuable testing opportunities for medical purposes.
“At present, the CDC does not recommend the necessary departure point for domestic travel,” the CDC told The Wall Street Journal on Friday. “As part of our close monitoring of the pandemic, in particular the ongoing proliferation of variants, we will continue to review public health options to limit and mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the travel space.”

The news was announced on the same day that Jeffrey Zients, director of the White House task force Coronavirus, had virtually met with executives of major U.S. airline meetings, including American Airlines, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines, Reuters reported.
The CDC offers no further explanation for its latest update on the trending travel topic, but emphasizes the existing guidance to avoid all travel in the fight against COVID-19.

Although the executives who run major businesses, including American, Southwest, JetBlue and Delta, say they support the coronavirus test requirement for international travelers entering the U.S., these leaders have exploded the same mandate for domestic travel as expensive and impractical.

Anxiety began to increase last week when Transport Minister Pete Buttigieg called for an “active conversation” with the CDC about such a mandate during an interview with Axios on 7 February.
A CDC spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

In early February, the Institute of Public Health instructed all U.S. travelers ages 2 and older to wear face masks throughout the trip, whether they were traveling by plane, bus, boat, train, or via any other transportation location.
In January, the CDC announced that negative tests are required for passengers on all international flights to the US following the news of more contagious strains from abroad.
