VITAMIN D reduces Covid mortality by 60%, a study has found, prompting the call for the rollout of therapy in UK hospitals.
The study also found that patients affected by the error were 80% less likely to be admitted to the ICU.

The research, published by the Social Science Research Network, has not yet been peer-reviewed.
But MP David Davis last night called for the therapy to be rolled out in hospitals, saying it was an ‘important study’.
Former Brexit secretary David Davis said: “The findings of this large and well-conducted study should lead to this therapy being administered to every Covid patient in every hospital at moderate latitudes.”
As the study shows that the clear link between vitamin D and Covid mortality is causal, the UK government needs to increase the dose and availability of free vitamin D for all the vulnerable groups.
“These approaches will save thousands of lives. It is overdue and must be started immediately.”
As part of the study, more than 550 people admitted to the Covid wards at the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona, Spain, were given vitamin D3.

The study from the University of Barcelona concluded that ‘adjusted results showed a reduced mortality rate of more than 60 percent’ for those who received the treatment.
It said that 36 of the 551 patients treated with calcipediol died of Covid-19, compared with 57 patients out of 379 in the control group.
Researchers from the North-West University previously found that infections and deaths were higher in countries where people had lower vitamin D levels.
However, the Center for Evidence-Based Medicine in Oxford said last year that “no clinical evidence has been found for vitamin D in COVID-19.”
A spokesman for the Department of Health and Social Care said: “Evidence of the link between vitamin D and Covid-19 is still being researched and we are keeping all strong evidence of treatments under review.”
This comes after Boris Johnson revealed that he was ‘optimistic’ about lifting the closure.
On Saturday, the government’s figures revealed that Covid’s death had dropped by more than a quarter within a week.
A further 13,308 Britons also tested positive for the disease, bringing the total number of infections to 4,027,106.
