The Lunar New Year Event ends in Pokémon GO. Let’s look back at what worked and what didn’t happen with this event.
What worked in this Pokémon GO Event
- Miltank: Shiny Miltank debuted just two events ago during Johto Celebration, but it was quite a difficult find in nature. During the event, the best chance was to catch one by searching for or looting a field research task, although Miltank’s brilliant rate did not increase. The best part of the Lunar New Year 2021 event in Pokémon GO was how it displayed Miltank in nature more frequently and even presented it during Tuesday’s Spotlight Hour.
- Time Research: What Niantic advertised as a Tauros-centric time trial was ultimately a way to earn Mega Gyarados Energy for free. It was a simple but fun dash line with rewards that were far more worthy than recently offered.
- Friendship Bonuses: The current friendship bonuses run through two events, starting with the Lunar New Year 2021 event and running through the annual Valentine’s Day event starting on Sunday. The bonuses had increased chances of Lucky going with friends, greater chances that Lucky would go, a greater trading distance and more berries from Gifts. While the last thing is something that is absolute nobody asked, the rest of the bonus benefits are some of the best available in Pokémon GO.
What did not work in this Pokémon GO Event
- Same as last year: apart from the above, nothing new has been added to the spa bath. The main fringe benefit was a Gyarados in nature capable of shining, which was the same major benefit as last year. The problem with this is that Gyarados are also in Mega Raids, which would make it shiny in all forms of encounters anyway, and this recurring main feature looks less interesting in 2021 than 2020 … especially considering the bad Magikarp community day Blink Gyarados in a Pokémon that has the most trainers. Without any new Unova or Kalos Pokémon, no costumes, no shiny versions and nothing truly unique to the game, it’s hard not to look at this event as a less captivating iteration of last year’s Lunar New Year Event. not.
Overall
Pokémon GO was recently in a strange place with a series of events, but the bonuses, the generous Timed Research and the second chance at a Shiny Miltank saved this. The wild spawns might have been boring, but otherwise it was a fun week of play.
