House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, blasted Senate Republicans as cowards who refused to stand up to former President Trump and convict him in the indictment.
She said these Republicans are more concerned about their political survival than protecting the constitution.
“What we saw in that Senate today was a cowardly group of Republicans who apparently had no options because they were afraid to defend their jobs, with respect for the institution in which they serve,” Pelosi said of the majority of the Senate’s GOP that Trump found. “innocent” of incitement to rebellion.
Pelosi joined the House’s indictment officials at a news conference on Saturday after the Senate acquitted Trump again in his second indictment. The vote 57-43 in favor of conviction, but still needed 10 short of the vast majority.

She praised the work of the nine indictment managers, but lamented that she had heard from her grandchildren that ‘justice has not been done’.
Pelosi would not attend the news conference but was motivated to come over after hearing GOP leader Mitch McConnell’s speech in the Senate. McConnell blasted Trump for his ‘shameful dereliction of duty’, but still finds Trump ‘innocent’, citing constitutional concerns over the trial that took place when Trump left office.
Pelosi said McConnell gave a “very unobstructed speech” because it was McConnell who delayed the start of the indictment until Trump left office by refusing to accept the indictment article the House wanted to deliver earlier.
“You chose not to receive it,” Pelosi said.
“That was the excuse he used,” she added.

Pelosi strongly opposed voting now to condemn Trump, a lesser punishment that has driven some dual senators as an alternative to accusation.
“Censorship is the slap in the face of the constitution,” Pelosi said. “It simply came to our notice then.
‘All these cowardly senators who could not see what the president did and what was at stake for our country are now going to get the chance to give a small slap on the wrist?
“We condemn people who use stationary for the wrong purpose,” Pelosi continued. “We do not condemn people for inciting uprisings that kill people in the Capitol.”
