Koala rescued after causing six cars on Australian highway

He was just hanging out!

A koala reportedly caused an accident with six cars when it crashed on one of the busiest highways in Australia on Monday.

A man whose car was hit from behind at around 07:00 and caused a chain reaction was the first to get out of his car to try to save the cuddly creature, reports Guardian Australia.

Another driver, Nadia Tugwell, told ABC Radio Adelaide she later saw the hairy devil moving between vehicles on the highway, not far from the stack.

“Then I saw a lady running after her with a blanket to catch it,” she recalls.

The two women managed to twist the koala and bundle it into a jacket before putting it in the back of Tugwell’s car.

Tugwell, who previously rescued other animals from local roads, arranged for the Adelaide Koala Rescue Center to meet her at a nearby gas station.

While she waited for rescuers to arrive, the cuddly creature got comfortable in her car – and even jumped in behind the steering wheel, photos showed.

“I was sitting there entertaining myself, but I had to jump out of the car at that point when he decided to take over,” Tugwell told Guardian Australia.

A koala rescue handler was finally able to move the marsupial into a bag.

“He was actually a calm koala, he didn’t even fight to be in the bag, he was just calm and went into the basket,” Tugwell said.

Ann Bigham, a volunteer at the rescue, told ABC the koala came “shot-free” from the ordeal.

The animal was released less than a mile from the highway.

“The koala was in very good condition, it was fortunate that it was not hit at all and thanks to the rescuers it was kept safe,” Bigham said.
