We have known since last year that Legacy Edge will leave support on March 9, 2021. But now Microsoft has announced its plans to remove the browser from Windows 10.
“The new Microsoft Edge is available on April 13, 2021 as part of the cumulative monthly security update of Windows 10 – otherwise the Update was released on Tuesday (or ‘B’),” the Microsoft Edge Team revealed. When you apply this update to your devices, the unsupported Microsoft Edge Legacy computer application will be removed and the new Microsoft Edge installed. The new Microsoft Edge offers built-in security and our best interoperability with the Microsoft security ecosystem, while being more secure than Chrome for businesses on Windows 10. “
The removal of Legacy Edge will occur in several Windows 10 versions, including 1803, 1809, 1903, 1909, 2004 and 20H2, and in all supported product releases, Microsoft says. (Remember that Legacy Edge is only available on Windows 10, and not on previous versions of Windows.) If the new Edge is not already installed, it will be installed when Legacy Edge is removed. Otherwise, only Legacy Edge will be removed.
There’s one caveat to the businesses that use Legacy Edge in kiosk mode: the new Edge does not support certain features offered by Legacy Edge. You can learn more here. And the outdated version of EdgeHTML, a versioning engine used by some Store apps, will still be supported. Of course, Microsoft recommends that developers use the new Edge-based WebView2.
For best results, of course, you need to upgrade to the new Edge before March 9th. I mean it before March 9th of last year, as this browser is a significant improvement over Legacy Edge.
