Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Britt Reid is expected to sit in the Super Bowl after he was involved in a multi-vehicle accident in Missouri on Thursday night in which two children were injured.
Reid, 35, is the son of Andy Reid, Chiefs coach.
Kansas City’s NBC affiliate KSHB reported Friday that a Kansas City police officer “smells moderately alcoholic” and that Britt Reid’s eyes are blood red and red.
The station based its reporting on a warrant application.
The coach told an officer he had two or three drinks, KSHB said. Reid complained of stomach pain and was transported to a hospital for treatment, the station reported.
He was not arrested. According to KSHB, blood was drawn for further investigation.
Reid’s pickup truck struck two vehicles around 9pm – one carrying fuel and the other pulling up to help – on a highway on Interstate 435, police said.
Two children, aged 4 and 5 respectively, were in the back of one of the vehicles that was struck and had to be admitted to hospital, one with life-threatening injuries, KSHB reports.
“The organization has been made aware of an accident with multiple vehicles involving Britt Reid, an out-of-line coach,” the Chiefs said in a statement Friday. “We are gathering information, and we will not comment further at this time. We think it is that prayers are involved with everyone.”
According to Ian Rapoport, reporter for the NFL Network Insider, Reid will not coach during the game against the home team at Tampa Bay on Sunday.
According to the records in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, Reid is charged with driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia in 2007. The following year, he was sentenced to six months behind bars.
