‘Everyone takes everything so seriously’: Olivia Newton-John hits back at critics who complain that the themes in Grease are problematic
Olivia Newton-John spoke out after online critics resented her 1978 film, Grease, following a recent UK film broadcast.
The 72-year-old singer and actress spoke on the podcast on Tuesday, A Life of Greatness, describing the setback as ‘stupid’.
“In this particular case, I think it’s a little silly,” she begins.

‘The film was made in the’ 70s and ’50s. It was a stage play, it was a musical, it was fun, it was a fun movie musical, and not to be taken so seriously. I think everyone takes everything so seriously.
“We need to relax a bit and just enjoy things as they are. I did not see it that way at all, and I think it’s just a fun movie that entertains people, that’s all. ‘
Twitter users accused the film of being sexist and “a little raped” after a television show at Boxing Day in the UK.

Many viewers criticized Olivia’s character, Sandy, for changing her appearance to win over John Travolta’s character, Danny.
Others complained about a scene where one of the characters hid under a sports field blazer so he could look up girls’ skirts.

Viewers also sniffed a lyric in the song Summer Nights, where Danny’s friends ask him about his romance with Sandy: ‘Tell me more, tell me more. Did she fight? ‘
Some people criticized the lack of diversity of the film, and one viewer argued that it was ‘full of white people’.
Others also complained that Rizzo, another character in the film, was ‘s ** t-shy’ after discovering she was pregnant.
