Teachers going into classrooms this school year can now receive coronavirus vaccines in San Bernardino County, but they get them from the school districts, so appointments at vaccine clinics will go to seniors, the province announced Wednesday, February 3rd.
The country also said it would open a few weeks of vaccinations for senior citizens this week and announce plans to open more vaccination centers for the community.
A mobile vaccination program for the elderly near their homes is also coming, reads a provincial news release.
It is part of a new focus to get as many elderly people vaccinated as possible.
“Elderly people are at greatest risk from COVID-19,” Curt Hagman, chair of the provincial board of supervisors, said in a written statement. “Therefore, the province has no higher priority than to ensure that we all in our country 65 and older reach and serve quickly.”
The province focused on seniors as well as first responders, but learned this week that all police officers and firefighters working in the province who want to be vaccinated are offered vaccination opportunities, the release said.
The province’s strategy is intended to allow vaccinations for teachers who are currently teaching in person or who plan to return to the classroom during the current school year, without interrupting the service to the elderly.
Schools and districts will work with local vaccine providers to serve suitable teachers rather than creating competition between seniors and teachers for online appointments, the release reads.
The strategy comes from a few weeks of talks with San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools Ted Alejandre, school districts and private schools across the province to create strategies for vaccinating teachers, according to the release.
“The wise management of vaccines and productive partnerships with vaccine providers such as hospitals and pharmacies help us to create a safe environment for teachers and students, which is essential in our efforts to control the virus and get our communities back to normal lives. , ”Hagman said. “Best of all, we’re doing it in a way that does not hinder the availability of appointments for seniors.”
