Smart said Muschamp, who has three games left in the 2020 season of Gamecocks, will work on the defensive side of the ball.
“It is very valuable to have a man who has been a head coach in two places in our conference. He knows the ins and outs of this conference,” Smart said. “He will be able to help our staff and our coaches in many ways. I’m excited to have him join us. ”
The 49-year-old Muschamp was head coach in Florida (28-21 record, 2011-14) and South Carolina (28-30, 2016-20).
Smart said he believes Muschamp wants to return to a coaching role on the field at some point.
“I would say you always want to be on the field if you’re an aspiring coach and get the opportunity to coach on the grass,” Smart said. “I know he’s not through with his coaching days. It is very important for him to get out here and have relationships and develop a position group and coach.
“His family was in the spotlight here recently. I know he feels like he’s moved his family all over the country, and it’s an opportunity for him to give back to them and be with them and see his son play. ”
