The steering committee can start deliberating again on Wednesday – the same day on which the entire GOP conference of the House will meet to debate whether Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) Should be fired from her leadership post after she voted to accuse Donald Trump.
“No, we’re going to work through some things,” House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) Told reporters briefly as he left the building.
IDP leaders could remove Greene from one or both of her committee posts. They can re-assign her as well. But any changes to the committee must first be approved by the management team, which includes members of leadership and that their vote carries more weight. The full IDP conference should eventually approve any changes to Greene’s committee allocations.
Part of the internal debate surrounding Greene focused on precedent. Republicans do not want to be seen defending Greene’s behavior, but are reluctant to punish Greene for remarks she made before coming to Congress.
Democrats, hoping to force the hand of the GOP, this week threatened to make a decision to start Greene from her committees if McCarthy does not act soon. The House Rules Committee will meet on Wednesday to prepare the measure for a floor vote.
Democrats have paid particular attention to Greene’s assignment to the Home Education and Labor Committee since she suggested before the election in Congress that the shooting in Sandy Hook and Parkland is a hoax. Greene also endorsed the violence against Democrats, adopting racist views and focusing on QAnon conspiracy theories.
Greene tried to return some of her comments about shooting incidents and scrubbed a handful of her social media posts. But she remained defiant in public, tweeting that she would ‘never’ apologize. Over the weekend, Greene also claimed she had a call with Trump and had his full support.
