Apple improved the iPhone 12’s durability last year with a ceramic screen on top of the likely custom Gorilla Glass. It’s proven to be very durable, and now we’ve had a look at how Samsung’s latest flagship Galaxy S21 Ultra stands up to the iPhone 12 Pro Max in a detailed fail test. Samsung’s latest can’t stand drops like the 12 Pro Max, and may be even less durable than its S20 Ultra predecessor.
PhoneBuff is out today with a detailed drop test of Samsung’s new Galaxy S21 Ultra versus the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Although smartphone makers are always pushing for durability, Apple has delivered the iPhone 12 series and the new ceramic screen in addition to really durable glass and a steel frame (for the Pro and Pro Max). Meanwhile, the Galaxy S21 uses Ultra Gorilla Glass Victus and an aluminum frame.
The test dropped both smartphones through a back, corner and face. And then a bonus round of another 10 drops – 14 for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Both the 12 Pro Max and the S21 Ultra penetrated the first two drops well, but the S21 Ultra saw a broken screen after the face sank, while the 12 Pro Max became intact.
After the bonus round, more and more damage was done to the Galaxy S21, with PhoneBuff noting that even the back cover scratches more than the S20. He said that it could only be the S21 damage, but that it could also be the weight and the new design (rounded edges) compared to the S20 Ultra.
After the first three rounds plus another 14 drops, the iPhone 12 Pro Max has its screen completely intact with only minor scratch damage. PhoneBuff calls it the ‘clear winner’ and it remains the YouTuber drop test champion for smartphones.
Meanwhile, the Galaxy S21 Ultra still worked, but in several places had a broken screen and noticeably scratched at the back. Check out the full drop test below:
