Matt LaFleur on Mike Pettine: It’s time for new defense leadership

Mike Pettine’s contract was up and the Packers decided not to renew it.

Head coach Matt LaFleur is looking for a new defense coordinator and says Green Bay needs to be more consistent in the unit.

LaFleur has acknowledged Pettine for his contributions since taking over as head coach in 2019.

“Just very grateful for what Mike brought us,” LaFleur said. “It was clear he was a man I really leaned on. And when you make a decision like this, it’s never easy. It weighs heavily on your heart. Like I said, very grateful for everything he brought. If we were to go to two NFC championship games, we would not be able to do it without Mike Pettine. And it just felt like it was one of those deals, where again it’s always a difficult decision, but just needs a new leadership on the side of the ball. So this is just the direction we decided to go. ”

LaFleur reportedly conducts an interview with Chargers that passes coordinator Joe Barry, defensive coach Chris Harris, and Rams coach Ejiro Evero. Barry, Evero and LaFleur were all in the same Rams staff in 2017. Barry just left the Rams to take up the Chargers post in January.
