Apple’s iPhone series (other than the iPhone SE 2020) has been doing without fingerprint scanners for years and instead relies on Face ID, but it looks like Apple may bring back the fingerprint scanner for the iPhone 13.
This is something we’ve heard before, and now The Wall Street Journal claims that two former Apple employees said the company was “working on screen fingerprint technology and was considering taking Touch ID and Face ID on the same. device. ”
So it would not be a return to the home button-based Touch ID fingerprint scanners of old, it would be a modern one on screen as many Android phones now have. We’ve heard that too, and according to this latest report, it’s a supplement to Face ID.
The best of both worlds
Both make sense. Face ID is one of the best face recognition you can get on a phone, and it is a feature that many people will probably want to keep using. But it is also imperfect. The dependence on seeing your face means that it does not work as well in the dark, or if you wear a mask or sunglasses. At that time, a fingerprint scanner would be much more convenient.
So will the iPhone 13 series get both of these biometric security features? Can be. Bloomberg also claimed in January that the feature was being tested, so there is no shortage of evidence for that. But so far, most evidence merely indicates that Apple is testing or considering the idea, rather than committing to it.
Smartphone companies often develop different prototype devices and test all kinds of technologies, not all of which are ever released, as evidenced by the many promising patents that are not yet products.
Apple can therefore decide against a fingerprint scanner on the screen whether to postpone it until a future year, especially since there are also rumors that this year’s iPhone will be called the iPhone 12S – this is mentioned in part because it is a small upgrade , and it does not sound to us like a small change.
However, we are still a long way from the possible launch of the iPhone 13 in September, so there is plenty of time for more rumors to indicate somehow. Hopefully we get a clearer idea of what Apple is planning in the coming weeks and months.
