People share their vaccination cards on social media. This is why you probably should not

CINCINNATI (FOX19) – People who have already received their vaccinations are starting to share photos of their vaccination cards on social media.

The Better Business Bureau says they may want to think twice about it.

Look, that’s completely understandable. Getting vaccinated against COVID-19 is a big deal, and you, let’s say it’s you, probably want to share the news (“So I did a thing”, etc.) with your family, friends and followers .

But if you take a selfie with the vaccination card, you could be open to identity theft.

The card has your full name on it. It also celebrates birthdays and information on where you got your vaccination. Adapt it to the information already available on your social media profiles and through your digital signature (hint: this is a lot), and someone may be well on their way to claiming your identity online.

But that’s not all. Placing your vaccination card can also make it easier for scammers to create sneaky versions of the cards.

According to BBB, scammers in the UK have been caught selling fake vaccination cards on eBay and TikTok.

BBB offers the following tips for sharing securely on social media:

  • Share your vaccine sticker or use a profile frame instead. If you want to get vaccinated, there are safer ways to do it. You can share a photo of your vaccine sticker or put a frame around your profile photo.
  • Check your security settings.Check your security settings on all social media platforms to see what you’re sharing and with whom. If you just want friends and family to see your posts, make sure your privacy settings are set.
  • Be careful about answering popular social media directions. Sharing your vaccine photo is just the latest social trend. Think twice before participating in other viral personal postings, such as listing all the cars you own (including make / model years), favorite songs, and top 10 TV shows. Some of these ‘favorite things’ are just passwords or security questions.
