A portion of the deepened Highway 1 in California closed after collapsing Friday during stormy rain showers.
According to a report, the scenic cliff road was closed for two kilometers in both directions south of Big Sur.
A California Department of Transportation spokesman called the damage, which washed away part of the road, a “slip out.”
“This is where we lost part of the highway, and now we’re facing a project to clean and repair the stretch,” Jim Shivers told the San Francisco Chronicle, adding that maintenance teams to the highway was sent to discover more damage.
A large part of the road is missing on photos of the road surface. Shivers said he could not estimate when the road would be reopened as engineers were still assessing the damage.
