Bridgerton: Great demand for lunch sets and formal tablecloths

Bridgerton has sparked a surge in demand for lunch sets and formal tablecloths as fans try to recreate the Regency dining experience.

The monumental success of the Netflix program has led to an increase in sales of tablecloths, cake stands and champagne, reports The Telegraph.

The series became Netflix’s biggest hit this week with 82 million views during the first month it’s available, setting the record for the debut most seen on the streaming service.

Set in 19th-century London, the series is adapted from a series of novels by Julia Quinn and follows the lives of a family in upper-class society.

Since the show’s debut sales in patterned tablecloths have risen by 553 percent, the retailer believes. Meanwhile, sales of ordinary tablecloths increased by 228 percent and the cake stand by 16 percent.

Even champagne got a boost when sales rose 52 percent.

Nicola Hattersley, a table buyer at John Lewis, said: ‘If we offer the perfect escape during the lock-in, we see the country embrace afternoon tea, while also taking a little extra time to set the table for formal tablecloths.

“We have also seen a strong demand for four-poster beds as customers buy more furniture since the series aired.”

The eight-part series, launched on Christmas Day, is now the streaming giant’s most watched program in 83 countries, including the United Kingdom, France and the US.

Although recently released, Bridgerton easily surpassed the previous leading spot The Witcher, which received 76 million streams in the first 28 days.

Netflix CEO Jinny Howe announced the impressive streaming numbers during an interview with Variety, adding that Bridgerton topped the top 10 list in every country except Japan.

Bridgerton was expected to hit 63 million households in its initial four-week projections, meaning it shattered the target by an impressive 19 million.

Netflix’s other hits, including The Queen’s Gambit and Lupine, also received very healthy numbers after their launches, with 62 and 70 meters respectively, Deadline reports.

Speaking about the timing of Bridgerton’s release amid the pandemic, playwright Jinny said: ‘I do think I see a pivot in terms of people who want things to feel a little more ambitious and just escape and feel good.

‘It’s hard to know where we’re going to be in a few years, but I think it’s going to be a while. I imagine it’s going to continue to go this blue sky, a feel-good route. ‘

This comes after the hit Regency drama was confirmed for a second series, this time to Anthony Bridgerton’s pursuit of love.

Bridgerton follows the self-titled family and how their lives are turned upside down by the revelations of the illusory and anonymous Lady Whistledown in London.

It is believed that the second season will start in the spring, Netflix has yet to confirm which characters will officially return for Series 2 or further details.

The first series focused heavily on the love story of Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, played by Regé-Jean Page, and Daphne Bridgerton, played by Phoebe Dynevor.

The two characters start as friends as a ploy to fool London’s elite and Lady Whistledown herself.

However, after Simon falls in love, he is forced to confront his inner demons after promising never to marry or destroy an heir to his duke, despite his deceased father.

The first series briefly touched on other stories, which included Anthony’s own tumultuous romance with his opera singer lover Siena Rosso, played by Sabrina Bartlett. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
