IDAHO VAL – Idahoans 65 years and older can receive the COVID-19 vaccine from Monday.
Earlier this month, health workers, first responders, K-12 teachers and staff, day care workers and a few other groups began receiving the vaccinations during their initial implementation. Next on the fitness list are the elderly, which also represents the most vulnerable demographics for the new coronavirus.
Vaccine suppliers in the area will begin working with the Southeast Idaho Public Health and Eastern Idaho Public Health on Feb. 1 to schedule appointments for the new priority group. As the vaccine supply is still limited, the appointments to receive it will initially be limited, but the area is preparing for the huge demand.
At the rate of Idaho vaccinations, it is expected to take 13 weeks to vaccinate the new priority group, according to a press release from the SIPH. This means that many individuals currently eligible for the vaccine may not be able to receive their first dose for a few weeks. If Idaho receives more doses than expected, the number of appointments will increase accordingly.

EIPH’s press release added that Teton County will host community-based vaccination clinics every week, with more information here. Lemhi County will have another process to plan vaccines with more information on the EIPH website.
Walk-in will not be accepted as appointments are required due to COVID security measures. EIPH asks that those who come to their appointments should provide identification documenting the age or job status. Please wear a shirt with your upper arm accessible to the vaccine, and wear a mask to protect you and the staff in the clinic.
In addition, the health district is asking that people who are not yet eligible for the vaccine should try to receive a dose before their due date.

“We understand that many people want to be vaccinated as soon as possible. We are asking for patience because we are dealing with a vaccine supply that is not sufficient to meet our requirements, ‘said Southeastern Director of Public Health in Idaho, Maggie Mann, in the press release. “SIPH and our community partners are committed to doing everything possible to vaccinate our community, and we appreciate your understanding as we coordinate with the state and community partners to increase the availability of vaccines.”
SIPH estimates that by this summer there will be enough vaccines for anyone who recommends them. No business costs will be charged, but insurance providers may charge administrative costs.
The COVID-19 vaccine is administered in two separate doses, separated by 3 to 4 weeks. SIPH added in their press release that those receiving the vaccine may experience mild side effects, including low-grade fever, sore arm and fatigue, but this is an indication that the vaccine is working.
“This vaccine offers hope, but it’s not clear yet,” Mann said. “As we roll out these vaccines across southeastern Idaho, it’s important that everyone continues to contribute to fighting this pandemic by wearing masks, washing hands and avoiding gatherings.”
