WASHINGTON, DC – Champaign County GOP Representative Jim Jordan announced Thursday that he would not run for the U.S. Senate seat that will be vacated by the upcoming retirement of Republican Rob Portman, a decision that opens the field for many other Republicans eager for the chance to succeed Portman.
A spokesman for Jordan’s campaign said he was ‘honored’ for the overwhelming encouragement he received to run for the United States Senate.
“However, he is only focused on representing the great people of the fourth district in Ohio and will not suffice for the seat of outgoing senator Rob Portman,” the spokesman said. “Mr. Jordan believes he is better suited at the moment to represent Ohio residents in the House of Representatives, where he, as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, can advance a first agenda in America, promote conservative values. and can hold great government accountable. ‘
Since Portman’s announcement Monday that he will retire at the end of his term instead of seeking re-election in 2022, much of the speculation about who can succeed him has revolved around Jordan. He has built a strong brand with Republican voters across the state, thanks to his passionate defense of former President Donald Trump in television interviews and during two sets of trial hearings in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The $ 5 million in his treasury in November showed that he has the ability to raise enough money for a nationwide race, and he is seen as likely to receive the approval of Trump, who wins the state of Ohio by eight percentage points. has.
If Jordan no longer participates, it is likely that other candidates will participate. Other Republicans who say they may run for office include Ohio Republican Party Chairman Jane Timken, former Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel, Secretary of State Frank LaRose, and businessman Mike Gibbons. and the U.S. House of Representatives, Steve Stivers of Columbus, Brad Wenstrup of Cincinnati, Mike Turner of Dayton, Anthony Gonzalez of Rocky River, Bill Johnson of Marietta and Dave Joyce of Bainbridge Township.
