With his ticket to Super Bowl LV beaten, former standout Auburn Prince Tega Wanogho will not accompany the Kansas City Chiefs to the NFL Championship after all.
The Chiefs on Monday released the attacking pack of their training group, ending Wanogho’s short stay with the team that almost paid off with a Super Bowl trip.
Wanogho’s first NFL season apparently ends on January 3 with the Philadelphia Eagles completing a 4-11-1 campaign in a 20-14 defeat against the Washington Football Team.
Wanogho was a sixth-round pick in the NFL draft on April 25 and spent his rookie season in the Eagles’ practice squad. Philadelphia raised Wanogho for the final season, and he played on the field against Washington for two special teams.
The practice group contracts for teams that did not make the NFL national season field expired on January 11th. The former Edgewood Academy standout visited the Chiefs on Jan. 12 and Kansas City signed Wanogho on Jan. 16 for his practice squad.
Wanogho’s release looked strange after the Chiefs lost their left attack on Sunday. No corresponding move was made to fill the training group released by Wanogho.
In Kansas City’s 38-24 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game, Eric Fisher had a torn Achilles tendon, Chiefs coach Andy Reid told reporters on Monday.
Martinas Rankin is the swing suit on the Kansas City depth map, but he only played in one game in the regular season – when the Chiefs rested many of their starters for the post-season in their 16th game.
Fisher was injured with about 12 minutes left to play against Buffalo. The Chiefs responded to his absence by moving Mike Remmers with the right tackle in Fisher’s place on the left. Right-winger Andrew Wylie moves on to the right-hander, and Stefen Wisniewski, a 10-year veteran with 106 NFL starts, enters the right-hand guard.
Remmers were already a substitute. He entered the series when Mitchell Schwartz suffered a back injury in the sixth game.
In Super Bowl LV, the Chiefs are scheduled to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 5:30 p.m. CST on Feb. 7 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. CBS will broadcast the match on television.
Kansas City want to become the first team to win NFL consecutive championships since the New England Patriots defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 24-21 in Super Bowl XXXIX on February 6, 2005, after beating the Carolina Panthers 32-29 in Super Bowl XXXVIII at 1 February 2004.
