Microsoft Edge is updated with many new features and themes

Microsoft has introduced a major update to its Edge browser, with new features that include slap tabs, new themes, and performance improvements. The latest features appear a year after the release of the Chromium version of Microsoft Edge.

The best known feature from a consumer standpoint is the introduction of new themes in Edge. Microsoft said it has created 24 new themes, giving users many options to personalize their browsing experience. Some of the themes are live from Xbox, including Halo, Gears, Forza, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Sea of Thieves, and more.

The themes apply a new background to the new page, while tabs, address bar, and other parts of the browser also take on the appearance of the theme. Support is also available for vertical tabs in the Dev Channel, which the company recently tested.

Speaking of design, Microsoft is incorporating more elements of its Fluent design system into Edge, starting with the browser icons that now have a rounder and softer look. Microsoft said it plans to bring more of its Fluent design system to more of its products, but did not share details.

The next thing people will see in Edge is sleep aids. Microsoft said the feature will improve browser performance by improving the use of memory and CPU resources. “If you have multiple tabs open, it will release system resources for inactive tabs to drive new or existing tabs as well as other applications, preventing delays and inertia.”

Microsoft is also implementing new password management features on Edge. One of the features is a password generator. The new one automatically suggests a secure password when you sign up for a new online account or change an existing password. The password generator comes with other security features, including a password monitor, that will tell you if one of your passwords is part of a list of leaked references on the dark web.

In terms of enhanced privacy, Microsoft said that Edge will include extra transparency to help users manage specific site permissions. Users will be able to determine which sites you share access to location, camera and microphone. You can also review, edit and reset site permissions if you change your mind.

These features are part of a much larger update of Edge, which also introduces the history and tab synchronization with all users. The feature was made available to certain countries earlier this month.
