Warning: This post contains spoilers from Wednesday Riverdale first season.
Yes, we think Veronica is not going to want to save any of her Riverdale prom photos.
What had to be an evening for her and Archie to remember turned into a nightmare in Wednesday’s season 5 premiere, when Archie confessed to her at their senior prom that he and Betty had been in the season for a moment and kissed has. (Veronica tracked down the song he had written for Betty and sang it on the speakeasy, thinking he had written it for her. Ouch.) The two lovebirds agreed to go their own way, and Veronica mourned her loss to her mother Hermione cried … overheard with her father Hiram. (Uh-oh. Archie, watch your back.)
Also in the premiere: Betty and Jughead follow the trail of clues in the video author mystery to an underground screening of illegal movies – where Jughead found his little sister Jellybean! – and the author struck again with a new video of a fake murder interrupting their prom. Archie applied to the Naval Academy, but lost an exhibition boxing fight to Katy Keene’s boyfriend KO Kelly (crossover!) And withdrew his application in horror. And Cheryl and Toni have won co-prom queens … but their future together seems bleak after Toni’s grandmother opposed her going with a Blossom.
To make sense of all the drama, TVLine spoke to him Riverdale star KJ Apa about Archie’s big bomb (and why he dropped it) and what’s next for his relationship with Veronica … and with Betty. (For more information on Apa on what to expect Riverdaleupcoming time jump, click here.)
TVLINE | I have to ask you what I asked out loud for the TV when I watched the premiere: Why would Archie tell Veronica about what happened to Betty? Was his conscience just up to him at that point?
I feel like you know and watch Archie Riverdale for a long time … it was not surprising to me when I read it. Because Archie is mostly the truth for the people he loves, and I feel like he’s not the best at living with debt. He is not the best at keeping things to himself if it hurts him or if he knows it could possibly hurt someone else. One of his mistakes is that he tells the truth a lot. [Laughs] Sometimes he makes mistakes and wastes the beans to everyone.
TVLINE | Is there anything coming back for Archie and Veronica for this? Can they even save a friendship at this point?
I think so. I feel like the two of them are so strong. The reason they pull apart is because they realize that after high school they are going to lead two different lives. I feel like they will always have that special connection they had. That one thing does not destroy the rest of the history they had.
TVLINE | We’ve seen Hiram Veronica cry over Archie, so we can assume the post of deputy mayor is no longer available. Will Hiram be on the warpath against Archie again?
Absolutely, yes. And we’ll see how they’ll do that someday. If he finds out about this, he certainly does not take it lightly. Let’s just say it.
TVLINE | As the “before” repeat reminds us, Betty is the one who turned things off with Archie, not him. Maybe he still has unresolved feelings there?
I mean, at the point, who knows? It’s always been back and forth … I feel like with Betty and Veronica, on the one hand, it’s his best friend he’s been best friends with all his life and all his life with neighbors, and then there is this other, brand new girl who came to town and he fell in love with. So this is one of the things: he will always be very close with both, just because of the nature of the relationship he has with both. But I really feel a lot about his relationship with Betty, and where it goes and how they feel about each other is something we explore in the time jump.
Alright, Riverdale fans, it’s your turn: Give the premiere a point in our poll, then grab a stand in the comments and share your thoughts.
