How Donald Trump Can Destroy the IDP in One Easy Step

“We will be back in some form. Nice life.”

Which undoubtedly struck fear into the hearts of every Republican politician (See: “McConnell, Mitch”) who has spent the last days and weeks making sure Trump never comes back.

While you’re trying to decipher what Trump means – are you coming back, but should we have a good life too? – is not a simple task; there was a tip he talked about in the news Tuesday night.

If Trump is serious about starting a party to challenge the GOP (and Democrats), it will be a total disaster for Republicans.

As Andrew Restuccia of WSJ noted:

“The president has a large base of supporters, some of whom were not deeply involved in Republican politics before Mr Trump’s 2016 campaign.”

Yes, yes, he does. And if Trump calls on all these supporters to flock to a more Trump party than he believes the Republican Party is positioned for, it immediately divides the traditional GOP vote into two factions. And none of the factions are big enough to be a majority in a general election.

A fragmentation of the Republican base backed by Trump – or, worse, an open war between the Trump party and the GOP – could paralyze the chances of conservatives regaining power in Washington not for months, but for years.

The point: Does Trump know the devastation he can cause on the party he has led for the past four years? Does he even care?
